Healthier Takes on the Classic Margarita

Most commercial margaritas use tons of refined sugar. These recipes use coconut water, grapefruit and kombucha as the "mixers" in the drinks. They are healthier than the classic margarita and still taste just as good, if not, BETTER than the typical margarita!

1. KOMBUCHA MARGARITA (Source)

Kombucha Margarita

This healthier margarita uses kombucha which is a slightly fizzy fermented beverage with amazing health benefits. One of the most important health benefits of kombucha is that it's loaded with healthy bacteria or probiotics. Probiotics contain beneficial bacteria to aid in digestion, proper nutrient absorption, and gut health.

INGREDIENTS (2 servings)

  • sea salt or flaky kosher salt for the rim

  • 3 oz tequila

  • 3 oz triple sec or Cointreau

  • 3 oz fresh lime juice (about 3 limes)

  • stevia or honey to taste (optional)

  • 6 oz plain kombucha

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Run a lime wedge along the rim of the glass and dip in the salt.

  2. Shake all the ingredients except the kombucha with ice in a cocktail shaker.

  3. Add the kombucha and give a quick stir.

  4. Strain into a glass over rocks. Garnish with a slice of lime, if desired.

NOTES

Use 100% agave tequila (“100% de agave”). Otherwise, you may be drinking 49% fermented cane sugar.

Kombucha is now widely accessible in most grocery stores including Publix, Kroger, Whole Foods, and Fresh Market. All kombucha flavors taste good in this margarita but we especially enjoy the Strawberry Hibiscus flavor from Clearly Kombucha.

2. SPICY MARGARITA (Source)

Tart and sweet from the grapefruit, yet spicy from the jalapeno. No refined sugar or preservatives here!

INGREDIENTS (2 servings)

  • sea salt or flaky salt for the rim

  • 2 oz tequila

  • 1 oz triple sec or Cointreau

  • 1 tsp honey (optional)

  • 1 large grapefruit

  • 1 jalapeno

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Slice and juice the grapefruit. Mix the honey with the grapefruit if using. Next, finely dice the jalapeno.

  2. Shake all the ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker.

  3. Strain into a glass over rocks. Garnish with a slice of jalapeno, if desired.

3. COCONUT WATER MARGARITA

This margarita is loaded with electrolytes from the coconut water. Perfect for hydration!

INGREDIENTS (1 serving)

  • sea salt or flaky salt for the rim

  • 2 oz tequila

  • 2 limes juiced

  • honey or stevia to taste (optional)

  • 4 oz coconut water

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Line the rim of a glass with lime and dip in the salt.

  2. Shake all the ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker.

  3. Strain into a glass over rocks. Garnish with a slice of lime, if desired.
